Screams And Scenes: Longlegs

Welcome to The Screening Room, where we’re all about "breaking down the best and the rest on screen." This blog will feature different segments tailored for a wide range of movies. Today, we’re kicking off with "Screams and Scenes," a segment dedicated to dissecting the highs and lows of horror films.

We’re diving into the haunting world of Longlegs, a film that promises to keep you on the edge of your seat. With its chilling premise and eerie execution, does it crawl to greatness or stumble along the way?

A common trend we tend to see in the horror category is terrible dialogue with a great plot, horrible plot but great actors, or terrible actors with a amazing budget and script.

Is Longlegs a step into the light and could eventually be a horror classic? or will it crash and burn and be known as another failed horror film?

Release Date: July 12, 2024

The opening scene immediately grabs your attention. It opens with a little girl and a car parked outside in the snow. The camera angles and sound effects are impeccable. It makes you question what going to happen and where. The man appear and only a portion of his face is visible. Why? I don't know, continue reading.....

Screams (Highlights)

  • Atmosphere: The movie excels at creating an unsettling mood through its use of cut scenes, camera angles, music and intricate dialogue.

  • Performances: Nicolas Cage delivers a standout performance, making Longlegs feel deeply uncomfortable and just an entity that one would and should keep a great distance from.

  • Visuals: The cinematography is haunting, with shots that linger just long enough to make your skin crawl.

  • Memorable Scenes: A particular highlight is when agent Lee Harker returns to her mothers house and questioning her mom about a certain event from the past, which showcases the film’s ability to shock and awe.

Scenes (Lows or Areas of Improvement)

  • Pacing Issues: Barely any drag moments. Great job at keeping the tone consistent and the flow eerie.

  • Underdeveloped Subplots: Everything tied together in the end. It was a shock and far from underwhelming

  • Predictability: Longlegs delivers on tension, and the plot twist were amazing and showcased beautifully

The Screening Verdict

Let’s see how Longlegs stacks up on our exclusive rating system curated by the one and only "Plot Professor":

  • 5 Reels: A cinematic masterpiece worthy of endless replays. 🌟

  • 4 Reels: A solid film that shines brightly. ✨

  • 3 Reels: Decent, but with room for improvement. 🎬

  • 2 Reels: Struggles to find its footing. 🛠️

  • 1 Reel: Toss it in the trash can. 🗑️

For Longlegs, I’m giving it 4 Reels (✨) — a chilling and visually captivating horror film that stumbles slightly in pacing but remains a must-watch for fans of the genre.

Longlegs might not be everyone’s cup of tea (a-lot actually), but it’s undeniably a well-crafted addition to the horror genre. Its unsettling atmosphere and strong performances make it a movie worth discussing. Have you seen Longlegs? Let me know your thoughts or suggest what I should review next in the comments below!
